thoughts from January 2014

nothing says January like a low sun in the sky
I might be in Florida now but I grew up in Michigan
I can feel this photo, the cold sun, the long shade
I miss it

for like 5 minutes...

lightening hitting this tree - just wow!
glad it didn't hit me

the most lightening strikes in the US occur in central Florida

don't ask.....

I love these paper fish, they make me happy

this is a friend of mine on his new "bike"
he always rode a unicycle, now it has a training wheel
or at our age - a cane

or the Human View

or the Human Survival View

and I never liked the moniker - global warming
that is just too nice sounding, warming - that sounds like a nice thing
who wants to be cold
but actually it is a lot more serious than that word makes it sound

how about Global Fever?  Global Fever and Chills?

Global Frying and Freezing?  Something more accurate

unbelievable!
and good reason not to go there
they don't need anymore people!

Speaking of civilization

I think I lived in one of these in a past life
I love them, they are so beautiful

hey kids, we need to do this on our beach

wow very cool - we want JUSTICE not EQUALITY then

J U S T I C E

are we getting it

this is from the President's State of the Union Address

look at the look on Boener's face
I want to slap that smirk right off - how rude

you would think he would at least be more professional than that!!
so disappointing

good to remember

is it just me or do you laugh out loud when you look at this dog?
even without the rest of it - I mean that look

love this - I am always amazed at the talent of humans

I am Greek!!  What are you?

this is the migration route of humans in the US - wow

I went from Michigan to California - few lines
California to Washington, then to Oregon - thick lines, everyone was doing it
Oregon to Florida - few lines

when I had a silk screening business years ago
I called it abracaDEBORAH

(pretty clever huh)

oh and my mom said Deborah was a Hebrew name....
(she was Episcopalian)

this was my logo

drawn by my friend Seiza -

the great and powerful!

thanks again sweetie!!

I seem to be on a January hiatus

I seem to be

"Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea"

thanks to Ray Troll for knowing just how I am feeling.....

that reminds me,
I have a great story about Ray.
When I was the executive director of a small non-profit in Washington State,
called, Wild Olympic Salmon,
we decided to sponsor a marathon to raise money -
we called it the Salmon Run.

What we needed was a catchy logo.
We loved Ray Trolls work and were all big fans.  He lived in Alaska, we even had some friends who knew him.....
So we are at a meeting and have to make some decisions, I say, let's write to Ray.  Ha ha ha.
Oh come on, someone says.  Call him, F. says, yeah, call him.
Ok, right, so I look on his webpage, call the number and fall off my chair
when someone answer's, Ray here.
Brilliant me, the first thing I can think of is to say was, oh my god, you answer you own phone!

After some conversation, turned out he was a regular famous artist kinda guy
and he said he would work up a logo and donate it to us -

unbelievable
he was a fish guy, but still unbelievable and yet true.
He is one hell of a nice guy.

I have long since lost the artwork he did for our run.
The group fell apart - well blew apart in the late 90's
(founders syndrome - spread like wild fire - deadly)

but here are some of my favorites

we were the salmon people

and we could totally relate to the fish themes

it was so us

this was our favorite

January 1st 2014

it was overcast but not cool
the steel gray made it feel like New Years Day to me

so

first Kayaking of the year

we put into Lemon Bay at a dead-end street
about a half mile from the house

it's an old section of town and the houses
are set back and they left the trees
it lovely

just past them are the newer houses
they couldn't be uglier
right next to the water, hardly any trees

we paddled up the bay to the Lemon Bay Park
a huge undeveloped area right on the bay - no houses
except this main building where they have talks and whatever

the shore is wild for miles - old Florida
with lots of little beaches

and mangroves

we have a favorite beach about a mile north
that is still in the park

nobody comes up this far - we have it to ourselves

it comes with a great water view

we had a picnic and played cribbage

I won - but not by much as you can see

the winning hand - not terrific but it did the job

always sad to leave

this is an invasive Brazilian pepper bush/tree on the beach
it is so Christmasy with the red and green

like the beach was decorated for the holiday

heading home we stopped and checked out the herons

and they checked out us

Happy Everything in 2014
