the great vacation

part II

we left Manzanillo and flew to Cancun via Mexico City

we had a great view of the Cuyutlan shore

across the laguna

and some great views of the Colima volcanoes

flying into DF always amazes me at the humanity it houses

we enjoyed the art in the airport there

this was an amazing statute of a head

covered in Huchilol bead work

one more flight got us to the Yucatan Peninsula
we had spent our first night in a little town just south of the Cancun airport
and got the early bus to Tulum

we visited 3 towns on this 10 day Yucatan adventure
Tulum, Coba and Akumal

first Tulum

when the bus stopped in Tulum, we headed to the Posada Yum Kin
which I had researched on the Internet
and where we had reservations

our room was not ready but we were offered bikes and headed to the beach

which was just a few miles away on this nice bike path

we had made it to the Caribbean!
that there was a storm and super windy
did not detract from the clear blue colors of the water
or my excitement

our room was worth waiting for when we returned

the hotel was great, just on the edge of town
easy walk or bike ride in, but away from the noise

our room was this one on the second floor

it had a great little balcony
a cute kitchen, that it seems I failed to get a photo of

real Mexican decor

a sweet pool complete with

bunches of orchids growing alongside

this is the stairway to our room

the place was awesome, affordable and I should be a travel agent

the main reason to come to Tulum is the ruins
another nice bike ride away the next morning

Tulum is a Mayan Ruin known for it striking location

on the Caribbean Sea

we have lots of pictures of the ruins - I will spare you
as you can see I already have museum fatigue
it was really crowded and you had to mostly stay on paths

at first I was very disappointed that I could not climb around on the ruins
but then I realized if people were allowed to climb on them all you would see
when you looked across at these huge buildings
would be tourist colors, back-backs and funny hats
and you would not be able to see the actual structures at all

which were amazing

I was able to walk up one 600 year old stairway
in the footsteps of the ancient Mayans

outside the ruins we meet these guys selling photos
of themselves with tourists
we opted for one of just them

on our last day in Tulum
the best part of the whole trip was about to be discovered by me

 cenotes

which will need a whole post to themselves

thanks Willi for many of these great photos

  1. Awesome pictures! Your lodging was perfect. Now I have a burning desire to learn how to make swans out of bath towels! Visiting ruins is such a unique feeling, isn't it? Post again soon...I have the feeling that cenote is not a $100. bill.
