Day 1 - Writing Conference - Sanibel Island

I am actually in my tent and writing this
this is the first time I have ever been in a campground with wifi
pretty sweet

late winter and spring I camped out near my parent's
so I could be available but not living there
I discovered the beauty of staying in a site with electricity
light, computer, fan
a fan was essential for camping in Florida in the spring

now we are having some rare below average cold spell
I have not worn this many cloths all at once since last January
people are here from like Maine and running around in shorts
I'm freezing.....I think it is like 63!
hey, it's relative

last night I got here before dark and picked a nice site in the back
near a small little creek, lots of trees
after dark I realize there was some strange noise
some big mechanical roaring noise that never is going to stop
oh no, I tried to ignore it, took a long walk to the beach, came back
yep still there
what, do we have to take down the tent and move to get peace?
yes, so late last night
I put everything back in the car, put the bike back on
drove around to the other side of the park where I knew there were lots of empty spaces
drive around several times can't decide and debate and debate
finally pick one
as I am setting up my tent a woman comes over, she is staying in the tent part
but is plugging her computer in at  "my" electric post
, we start talking, she is here for the workshop too
wow, I made a friend, she is very cool and we hung out at the conference today
what are the chances in this huge park that I would move to the one site
that had her computer??

I love this planet

here is my thought for the day from the workshop:

art is a lie that makes us see the truth

and now go out and read everything you can by Tim O'Brien
he is the one who said it - he's a great liar

ps the photo on the top of this blog is from Sanibel Island

here is my last comment on today's election:

let it be known for the record

that I think it is not a tight race

the bought and sold media in this country just want you to believe that

(- cause you can't steal an election unless it is "close"......)

I think it is Obama by a landslide.......

interesting facebook photos from October

this one from superstorm Sandy

the perfect example of why not to build on the beach

how many examples do we need?

thanks Albert
(do you think that was his pick-up line??)

love this photo of Port Townsend

we lived there from 1982 to 2003
you can almost see my uptown house and the V street house in this photo
we lived in 8 houses in those 20 years!
who can name them all?   L.?

it's beautiful there and I miss the community we had
but the weather

for example
we use to say that we hoped summer would come on a week-end....

here is one for the election

the other super storm

and my personal favorite:

ok, on to more serious things

I am not sure about the words, but the photo is inspirational

 I leave you with happiness

tonight
watch the October Orionid Meteor Shower

the Orionids are one of two annual meteor showers produced by icy pieces of
Halley’s Comet

Halley’s Comet - the most famous comet of all time
passing earth every 75 to 76 years

the last time it passed earth and was visible with the naked eye was in February 1986
(where were you?)

the debris field is so large it covers the distance between the earth and the moon

The Orionid Meteor Shower is named after the constellation Orion because
the meteors seem to come from just north of Orion's bright star Betelgeuse

the Orionid Meteor Shower can be seen around the world
between midnight and dawn

(if you are in an area that does not have cloud cover or too many lights)

it is active from October 3, 2012 through November 13, 2012
this week-end being the peak

here is a link to watch a live stream of the meteor shower

happy viewing

another day cram packed with celestial events
